The story

René Magritte: A World of Wonder

Hello! My name is René Magritte, and I was a painter who loved to fill my canvases with mystery and wonder. I was born on November 21st, 1898, in a small town in Belgium. Even as a boy, I loved to draw and create. When I was about 12 years old, I saw my first real art exhibition, and it felt like magic. When I was 13, in 1912, something very sad happened in my family, which made me see the world in a different, more mysterious way. Around that same time, I met a girl named Georgette Berger, who would one day become my wife and my best friend.

When I was old enough, I moved to Brussels, the capital of Belgium, to study at a big art school called the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in 1916. After I finished my studies, I wasn't sure what kind of art to make. To earn money, I designed posters and even wallpaper! In June of 1922, I married my dear Georgette. A few years later, I saw a painting by an Italian artist that felt like a strange and wonderful dream. It showed me that art didn't have to just copy what we see; it could show what we imagine. This inspired me to join a new group of artists called the Surrealists around 1926.

Being a Surrealist meant I painted things from my imagination and dreams. But I didn't paint made-up monsters or fantasy castles. I loved to paint ordinary things you might see every day—like an apple, a man's bowler hat, a fluffy cloud, or a bird. My trick was to put these normal things in very unusual situations to make you stop and think. In 1929, I painted a very clear picture of a tobacco pipe. But right underneath it, I wrote the words 'Ceci n'est pas une pipe,' which is French for 'This is not a pipe.' People were puzzled, but it was true! It wasn't a real pipe you could smoke; it was only a painting of a pipe. I loved playing these little games to make people question what is real. In 1964, I painted one of my most famous pictures, 'The Son of Man,' which shows a man in a suit and a bowler hat, but his face is completely hidden by a bright green apple floating in front of it.

I painted for my entire life, always exploring new mysteries on my canvas. I lived to be 68 years old, and my head was always full of surprising ideas. Today, my paintings are famous all over the world. They show up in museums, books, and even movies. I hope that when you see my art, it makes you smile, ask questions, and remember that the world is full of wonder. If you just look at things a little differently, you can find magic in the most ordinary places.
