The story

Sir Francis Drake: The Explorer

Hello there! My name is Francis Drake, and I was an explorer who sailed the seven seas. I was born in a cozy farmhouse in a part of England called Devon around the year 1540. Growing up so close to the water, I fell in love with the ocean and dreamed of having my own ship and going on big adventures.

When I grew up, I became a very good sailor. The Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth I, heard about my skills. She knew I was brave and wanted me to explore the world for her and for England. In the year 1577, she gave me a very important job: to set sail on a secret mission. I gathered my crew and five ships, with my favorite ship being the Pelican, which I later renamed the Golden Hind.

Our journey was the biggest adventure of all! We sailed farther than most people had ever gone before. We faced giant waves, powerful storms, and visited new lands with amazing sights. It was a long and difficult trip that took almost three whole years. When we finally sailed back to England in 1580, we had done something incredible—we had become the first Englishmen to sail all the way around the world!

Queen Elizabeth was so proud of what I had accomplished. To thank me, she came aboard my ship, the Golden Hind, in 1581. She had a sword with her, and in a grand ceremony, she tapped me on the shoulder and said, 'Arise, Sir Francis Drake!'. From that day on, I was a knight. I continued to serve my queen, and in 1588, I helped protect England as a commander in a great sea battle against the Spanish Armada.

I spent my life exploring the mysteries of the ocean and going on incredible adventures. I lived to be about 56 years old. Today, people remember me as a daring English explorer who bravely sailed around the globe. My voyages helped people learn more about the world and made England a powerful force on the seas.
