Hello! My name is Francis Drake, and I was an explorer who sailed the great, wide oceans. I was born around the year 1540 in a county called Devon, in England. My family lived near the sea, and from the time I was a little boy, I dreamed of adventure on the waves. The sound of the gulls and the smell of the salty air were my favorite things. I learned to sail when I was very young, and soon I was off on voyages with my cousin, John Hawkins. The sea was my school, and it taught me everything I needed to know about navigation, weather, and how to be a captain. It was a tough but exciting way to grow up.
Our queen in England was the powerful Queen Elizabeth I. At that time, in the 1570s, England and Spain were not friends, and they often competed for power and treasure. The Queen allowed me to be a 'privateer,' which was a bit like a pirate with permission! It meant I could legally capture treasure from Spanish ships and colonies for England, which helped make our country richer and stronger. I sailed to the Americas on many daring raids, surprising the Spanish settlements and taking their gold. They were not very happy with me and even gave me a nickname: 'El Draque,' which means 'The Dragon' in Spanish. I suppose to them, I was as fearsome as a dragon guarding its treasure.
My biggest adventure began on December 13th, 1577. I set off from England with five small ships on a secret mission from the Queen to explore and raid the Pacific coast of the Americas. My own ship was called the Pelican, but I later renamed it the Golden Hind to honor one of my supporters back home. We sailed all the way around the world! It was a long and dangerous journey that no English captain had ever completed before. We sailed through stormy seas at the tip of South America, a place so wild it tested all of our skills. We captured Spanish treasure along the Pacific coast, and in 1579, I even claimed a piece of land in what is now California for our queen, calling it 'Nova Albion' or 'New England.' After nearly three years, on September 26th, 1580, the Golden Hind sailed back to England, full of treasure and amazing stories. To thank me for my service and the riches I brought back, Queen Elizabeth I came aboard my ship in 1581 and made me a knight. From then on, I was known as Sir Francis Drake.

My adventures against Spain weren't over. In 1588, the King of Spain sent a huge fleet of 130 ships, called the Spanish Armada, to attack England and remove our queen from the throne. It was a terrifying sight to see so many enemy ships sailing toward our home. I was made a vice admiral in the English navy, serving as second-in-command. We had smaller, faster ships, and we were clever in our tactics. We fought a great battle at sea and even sent old ships filled with fire, called fireships, toward the enemy to scatter them in a panic. A great storm helped us, too, blowing many of their ships off course. In the end, we defeated the mighty Armada. It was a huge victory for England, and everyone at home celebrated our safety and success.
I continued to sail and serve my country for many years after that great victory. My final voyage took me back to the Americas, a place I knew so well. While on that journey, I grew sick with a fever and passed away at sea in January of 1596. I lived to be about 56 years old. People remember me as the first Englishman to sail completely around the globe and as a hero who helped protect England from its enemies. My adventures inspired many other sailors and explorers to see what lay beyond the horizon, opening up the world in new and exciting ways.
