The story

Sophocles, the Storyteller

Hello! My name is Sophocles. I lived a very, very long time ago. My home was a sunny city called Athens, in a country named Greece. I loved living in Athens. The buildings were big and beautiful, and so many wonderful people lived there. Walking around my city always made me feel happy and full of ideas.

My most favorite thing in the world was telling stories. I did not just tell them with my voice. I wrote my stories down so they could become plays. A play is a story that people act out. In my city, actors would put on special costumes and wear masks to look like the people in my stories. They would stand on a very big stage, and everyone from the city would come to watch. My stories were about brave heroes and powerful kings. They were filled with big, important feelings that made people think and feel too.

I wrote so many plays in my life, more than 100 of them. Even though I lived such a long time ago, people all around the world still read my stories and watch my plays today. Two of my most famous plays are called Oedipus Rex and Antigone. I lived to be about 90 years old, and my life was full and happy. It makes my heart glad to know that my stories about heroes and feelings are still being shared with you.
