Hello! My name is Taras Shevchenko. I was born a long, long time ago, on March 9th, 1814, in a small village in Ukraine. My family were serfs, which meant we weren't free. We belonged to a wealthy landowner. Even though life was hard, I found joy in one special thing: drawing. I would draw on anything I could find—walls, fences, and scraps of paper—using bits of charcoal or chalk. Art was like magic to me.
When I was a teenager, my master, Pavel Engelhardt, noticed my talent for drawing. He took me with him to big cities. In the city of Saint Petersburg, I met many kind artists and poets. They saw my paintings and believed I could become a great artist. A famous painter named Karl Bryullov and a kind poet named Vasily Zhukovsky decided to help me. In 1838, when I was 24 years old, my new friends raised enough money to buy my freedom. I was finally free! It was the happiest day of my life.
Now that I was free, I could finally go to school at the Imperial Academy of Arts. I spent my days painting pictures of beautiful Ukrainian landscapes and people. But I didn't just paint. I also wrote poems about my love for Ukraine and the struggles of my people. In 1840, I published my first book of poems, called 'Kobzar'. People loved it, and it became very famous.
Some powerful people didn't like my poems because I wrote about freedom and fairness. In 1847, I was arrested and sent far away to be a soldier. The ruler, called the Tsar, said I was not allowed to write or paint ever again. It was very difficult to have my art and words taken away from me. But I never stopped hoping and dreaming of my beloved Ukraine.

After ten long years, I was finally allowed to return. I continued to create art and write poems for the rest of my life. I lived to be 47 years old. Today, my poems and paintings are celebrated all over the world. In Ukraine, people see me as a national hero. My work gave a voice to the Ukrainian people and is a symbol of their strength, culture, and love for freedom.
