The Story of Siddhartha

Hello, my name is Siddhartha Gautama, but many people today know me as the Buddha. I was born a prince around the year 563 BCE in a beautiful kingdom called Lumbini, which is in the country we now call Nepal. My father, King Suddhodana, wanted to protect me from any sadness, so he surrounded me with every comfort and luxury inside our palace walls. I had beautiful gardens, fine clothes, and anything a young prince could ever wish for. But even with all of this, as I grew into a young man, a deep curiosity about the world outside the palace began to stir within me.

When I was 29 years old, I finally traveled beyond the palace gates, and what I saw changed my life forever. My father had tried to hide the world’s difficulties from me, but on my journeys, I saw four things that opened my eyes. First, I saw an old man, bent with age. Then, I saw a person who was very sick. After that, I saw a body being prepared for a funeral, and I understood that everyone eventually passes away. These sights showed me that aging, sickness, and death are parts of life that cause suffering. The last thing I saw was a holy man, called an ascetic, who owned nothing but looked peaceful and calm. Seeing him gave me hope that there was a way to find peace, even in a world with so much suffering.

After seeing these things, I knew I could no longer live my comfortable life as a prince. Around the year 534 BCE, I made the very difficult choice to leave my home, my wife, and my newborn son. I went into the forest to search for answers to the problem of suffering. For six long years, I lived as an ascetic. I learned from many wise teachers and practiced extreme self-discipline, sometimes going without food until I was weak and thin. I thought that by punishing my body, I might find a great truth. But this difficult path did not lead me to true understanding. I realized that living a life of pure luxury was not the way, but neither was living a life of extreme hardship. I needed to find a 'Middle Way.'

I left the forest and found a peaceful spot under a large fig tree in a place now called Bodh Gaya. I sat down and made a promise to myself that I would meditate there until I found the answers I was searching for, no matter how long it took. After a long period of deep and focused meditation, around the year 528 BCE, a great understanding came to me like a sunrise in my mind. I finally saw clearly what causes suffering and, more importantly, how to be free from it. In that moment of perfect clarity, I became the Buddha, which means 'the awakened one.' The tree I sat under has been called the Bodhi Tree, or 'tree of awakening,' ever since.

For the next 45 years, I traveled all across northern India to share what I had learned with anyone who wanted to listen. I taught that every single person, whether they were rich or poor, a king or a farmer, had the power to find peace and compassion within themselves. I lived to be 80 years old, passing away around 483 BCE. My teachings, which are called the Dharma, became the foundation for a way of life known as Buddhism. Today, millions of people all over the world still follow my path, finding guidance in my ideas about kindness, mindfulness, and the journey to inner peace.
