Ulysses S. Grant
Hello. My name is Ulysses S. Grant. You might be surprised to learn that when I was born on April 27th, 1822, my parents named me Hiram Ulysses Grant. I grew up in a small town in the state of Ohio. As a boy, my favorite thing in the world was being around horses. I learned how to ride when I was very little, and soon I was known all around town for being able to train even the trickiest horses. They were my best friends, and working with them taught me to be patient and calm.
When I turned 17 years old, my father arranged for me to go to a special school for soldiers called West Point. It was a big change for me. When I got there, I saw that they had made a mistake on the list of new students. They had my name written down as Ulysses S. Grant. I thought about it and decided that I liked the new name, so I kept it. At West Point, I learned all about being a good soldier and a strong leader. After I graduated in 1843, I married the love of my life, a wonderful woman named Julia Dent, and we started our family together.
A very sad time came to our country. It was called the Civil War. The United States was divided, and people from the North were fighting against people from the South. The President at the time, Abraham Lincoln, believed I could help. He asked me to be the general for the Union Army, which was the army of the North. It was a very hard and difficult job, but I knew it was important to bring our country back together as one. I worked hard to lead the soldiers. After a long time and many battles, the war finally ended in 1865. The United States was one country again, and we could begin to heal.
A few years after the war, in 1868, something amazing happened. The American people chose me to be their 18th president. It was a very big honor, and I wanted to do a great job. As president, my main goal was to help our country heal and grow strong after the war. I worked hard to make sure everyone was treated fairly and had the same rights. I wanted all Americans to feel safe and respected. I served as the president for eight years, trying my best to help our country move forward in peace.
I lived to be 63 years old. Today, people remember me as the general who helped unite our country and as a president who worked for peace and fairness for all Americans. I always tried my best to do what was right for the people and the country I loved.
