Just want Vasco da Gama?
Hello! My name is Vasco da Gama. I was born in a town called Sines in Portugal around the year 1469. My home was very close to the ocean, and I loved watching the tall ships sail in and out of the harbor. I would look out at the big, blue water and dream that one day I would be the captain of a great ship, exploring faraway lands and discovering new places.
When I grew up, the King of Portugal, whose name was Manuel I, gave me a very important job. He asked me to sail all the way to India! At that time, no one from Europe had ever sailed there before. The King wanted to find a new way to get wonderful spices, like cinnamon and pepper, which were very valuable back home. It was a big and exciting mission. So, on July 8th, 1497, I set off from Lisbon with four ships and a brave crew, ready for the biggest adventure of my life.
Our journey was long and difficult, and it took a lot of courage. We sailed down the coast of Africa, where we faced huge waves and powerful storms that tossed our ships around. We had to be very brave. We sailed all the way around the very bottom tip of Africa, a place called the Cape of Good Hope. For many months, all we could see was water in every direction. We did not have fancy tools to help us, so we used the sun during the day and the stars at night to find our way. Finally, after almost a year at sea, we spotted land! On May 20th, 1498, we arrived in Calicut, India. We had done it! We were the first Europeans to ever reach India by sea.
We returned to Portugal in 1499 and were welcomed as heroes. The king was very happy, and I sailed to India again on other voyages to continue my work. I lived to be around 64 years old. People remember me today because my voyage connected Europe and Asia in a brand-new way. My journey created a sea path for ships to travel between these two parts of the world, changing maps and the way people traded forever.
