Hello! My name is Walter Brattain. When I was a little boy, I loved to explore the world around me. I grew up on a big ranch where I learned to fix things and figure out how they worked. I always asked lots of questions because I was so curious about science. I wanted to understand everything.
When I grew up, I became a scientist. I worked in a big laboratory with my friends John Bardeen and William Shockley. We loved doing experiments together! We wanted to find a better way to make radios and telephones work. In 1947, we built something very, very small but super important. We called it a transistor. It worked like a tiny, super-fast light switch, turning things on and off very quickly.
Our little transistor changed everything! It helped make computers, cell phones, and even your favorite toys work. It was the start of so many amazing things we use every single day. I lived to be 85 years old, and I was so happy that our teamwork helped make the world a more connected place. Always remember to stay curious and work with your friends—you might invent something amazing, too!
