The story

Walter Brattain

Hello! My name is Walter Brattain, and I was a scientist who helped invent something tiny but very powerful. I was born a long, long time ago, on February 10th, 1902. Even though I was born in a faraway place called China, I grew up on a big cattle ranch in Washington state in America. I loved spending my days outdoors, fixing tools for my dad, and trying to understand how everything worked, from the engine on our tractor to the stars in the night sky. I was always asking questions!

My curiosity followed me all the way to college, where I studied my favorite subject: physics! It’s the science of how things move and work. After a lot of hard work, I finished all my schooling in 1929. That same year, I got a very exciting job at a famous place called Bell Telephone Laboratories. It was like a giant workshop for inventors, where my job was to experiment and discover new things about electricity.

At Bell Labs, I worked with two other smart scientists named John Bardeen and William Shockley. We were a team! Back then, radios and telephones used big, clumsy glass tubes that got very hot. We knew there had to be a better way to control electricity. We experimented for a long time, and then, one special day in December of 1947, we did it! We created something new. It was a tiny device we called a transistor. It was smaller than a fingernail, but it could do the job of those big glass tubes.

Our little invention was a huge deal! For our discovery, my friends and I were given a very special award called the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1956. It was a wonderful honor. But the best prize was knowing that our transistor would help make amazing new things possible, like smaller radios, televisions, and even the first computers.

I lived to be 85 years old, and I spent my life being curious. Today, the transistor I helped invent is in almost everything electronic you use, from your family's car to your video games and phones. Billions of them work together as tiny brains, and it all started with a small team asking big questions.
