Hello there. My name is William Gilbert. A long, long time ago, I was a doctor. I helped people feel better when they were sick. I had a very important job as the doctor for a famous queen, Queen Elizabeth I. But even though I liked being a doctor, I had a secret hobby that I loved even more.
When I was not helping people, I loved to do experiments. My favorite things to experiment with were magnets. Have you ever played with magnets? They are so much fun. I noticed that when you let a magnet spin, it always points the same way—north. I wondered why that happened. I spent a lot of time in my workshop, which I called a laboratory, testing my ideas about magnets.
After many experiments, I had a giant idea. What if our whole world, the Earth, was one big, giant magnet? That would explain why compasses always point north. It was a huge discovery. In the year 1600, I wrote a book about it so everyone could learn about magnets and electricity. I lived a long and happy life full of questions and discoveries. People remember me today as the person who first understood the amazing magnetic powers of our planet.
