The story

A Biography of William Gilbert

Hello there! My name is William Gilbert, and I'd like to tell you my story. I was born a long, long time ago, on May 24th, 1544, in a town called Colchester in England. Even as a boy, I was curious about everything. I loved to read and learn how the world worked. This love of learning took me to a famous school, Cambridge University, where I decided to become a doctor. I wanted to understand the human body and help people feel better. After many years of study, I became a very successful physician in London.

Being a doctor in London was very exciting. I had many important patients, but in 1601, I was given the most important job of all: I became the personal physician to the Queen of England, Elizabeth I! It was a great honor to look after the health of the queen. She was very intelligent and was interested in my work. But even while I was busy being a doctor, my mind was always buzzing with other scientific questions. I had a secret passion that I worked on for many years: the mysterious force of magnetism.

What makes a compass needle point north? Why do some materials stick to each other? For 17 years, I conducted hundreds of experiments to find out. I learned that many old stories about magnets, like the idea that garlic could stop a magnet from working, were just silly superstitions. I proved things by testing them myself. I even created a small, spherical model of the Earth out of a magnetic rock called a lodestone. I called it a 'terrella,' which means 'little Earth.' By moving a tiny compass over my terrella, I discovered that our planet acts like one giant magnet! This explained why compasses work the way they do. I also studied static electricity, the strange crackle you get when you rub amber. I was the first person to use the word 'electricus' to describe this force. In the year 1600, I published all my findings in a big book called 'De Magnete,' which means 'On the Magnet.'

My book was read by scientists all over Europe and inspired them to test their own ideas with experiments, just like I did. I was so proud of my work. I lived to be 59 years old, passing away in 1603. Today, people call me the 'father of magnetism' and 'the father of electricity.' My discoveries helped sailors navigate the seas and paved the way for everything we know about electricity and magnetism, from power plants to the gadgets you use every day. I hope my story shows you that with curiosity and careful observation, you can uncover the amazing secrets of our world.
