Just want William Harvey?
Hello! My name is William Harvey. I lived a very long time ago, in a time of castles and kings. I was a doctor, and I was one of the most curious people you could ever meet! I always wanted to know how things worked, especially our amazing bodies. I thought of the body as a wonderful, tricky puzzle that I wanted to solve.
Back in my day, around the year 1628, people were not sure how blood moved around. I spent a lot of time watching and learning, and I made a super important discovery! I found out that the heart is a powerful muscle that works like a pump. Thump-thump, thump-thump! It pushes blood all through your body in little tubes. The blood goes on a big trip, all the way to your tippy-toes and back to your heart again, in a big circle. This is called circulation.
My big idea about the heart being a pump helped other doctors understand how to keep people healthy. It was a brand new way of looking at our bodies! I lived to be 79 years old, and I was so happy I could share my discovery with the world. Today, doctors still use what I learned about the heart and blood to help you and everyone else stay strong and healthy.
