Just want William Herschel?
Hello! My name is William Herschel. I was born a long time ago, on November 15th, 1738, in a country called Germany. When I was a boy, I loved music more than anything. I learned to play the oboe and the organ, and when I grew up, I moved to England to be a professional musician. But I had another secret love: the stars! At night, I would look up at the sky and wonder about all those twinkling lights. The beautiful patterns in music made me think about the patterns in the universe, and I wanted to see them up close.
The telescopes you could buy back then weren't strong enough for me. I wanted to see farther and clearer than anyone had before! So, I decided to build my own. My amazing sister, Caroline, helped me. We spent hours and hours in our workshop, grinding and polishing big metal mirrors to catch the starlight. We made hundreds of them! Our telescopes were some of the biggest and most powerful in the world at the time. Finally, I had the perfect tools to explore the night sky from my own backyard.
One night, on March 13th, 1781, I was looking through one of my favorite telescopes. I was carefully mapping all the stars in a part of the sky when I saw something strange. It was a fuzzy, greenish dot that wasn't on my star charts. I watched it for a few nights, and guess what? It moved! Stars don't move like that. I realized I had found something new. At first, I thought it was a comet, but soon, other astronomers and I figured out it was a whole new planet. It was the first planet discovered since ancient times! We named it Uranus. I was so excited I could have danced a jig!

Discovering Uranus was just the beginning. With Caroline by my side, I found new moons, fuzzy clouds of gas called nebulae, and even a new kind of light we can't see, called infrared. I lived to be 83 years old, and I spent my life looking up. Today, people remember me for showing the world that our solar system was much bigger than anyone imagined. I hope my story makes you want to look up at the stars and wonder what you might discover, too.
