The story

Wu Cheng'en: The Man Who Wrote About the Monkey King

Hello! My name is Wu Cheng'en. I lived a very, very long time ago, in the 1500s. I lived in a beautiful country called China. When I was a little boy, I loved to hear stories. My dad would tell me amazing tales about magic, monsters, and brave heroes. I would close my eyes and imagine all the adventures in my head. It was my favorite thing to do.

When I grew up, I wanted to write my own story. I wrote a very big and exciting book called Journey to the West. The hero of my story is a super silly and super strong monkey. His name is Sun Wukong. He was born from a magic rock. He can fly on a fluffy cloud and has a special staff that can grow very big or shrink very small. He goes on a big trip with his friends to help a kind monk.

I lived a long life, for about 82 years. Even though I lived a long time ago, my story about the amazing Monkey King is still shared all over the world. Children love to read about his funny tricks and brave adventures in books. They also get to watch him in cartoons. I am so happy that my magical monkey friend still makes people smile today.
