Just want Zheng He?
Hello! My name is Zheng He, but I want to tell you my story from the very beginning, when I was a boy named Ma He. I was born in 1371 in a faraway province of China called Yunnan. My family was part of the Hui people, and we were Muslim. My father and grandfather had even traveled all the way to a holy place called Mecca, and they filled my head with amazing stories of the world beyond our home. But when I was about ten years old, in 1381, an army from the new Ming Dynasty conquered our province. My life changed forever. I was taken from my home and sent to serve a powerful prince named Zhu Di.
I was clever and worked very hard for Prince Zhu Di. I grew tall and strong, and over the years, the prince began to trust me with important jobs. We became good friends, and I helped him in his military campaigns. In 1402, my friend, Prince Zhu Di, became the new ruler of all of China! He was known as the Yongle Emperor. To reward me for my loyalty, he gave me a great honor: a new name. From that day on, I was no longer Ma He. I was Zheng He.
The Yongle Emperor had a giant dream. He wanted to show the world the power and riches of his empire. He wanted to build friendships and trade with faraway kingdoms. He chose me for the most important job of all: to be the commander of a gigantic fleet of ships. These weren't just any ships. Our biggest ones were called 'baochuan,' or 'treasure ships.' They were like floating cities, longer than a football field, with nine huge masts and bright red sails. They were the biggest ships anyone in the world had ever seen at that time. In 1405, with over 300 ships and nearly 28,000 men, I was ready to lead our first amazing voyage.

Between 1405 and 1433, I led seven incredible expeditions across the Indian Ocean. We sailed to places that are now Vietnam, Thailand, India, and Sri Lanka. We traveled to the Arabian Peninsula and all the way to the eastern coast of Africa, visiting lands that are now Somalia and Kenya. We didn't go to conquer; we went to make friends. We brought gifts of beautiful silk and delicate porcelain and traded them for spices, pearls, and medicines. The most wonderful things we brought back were the amazing animals. Imagine the emperor's face when we presented him with a giraffe from Africa! He thought it was a mythical creature called a 'qilin,' a sign of peace and good fortune.
My last great voyage began in 1431. I had spent nearly three decades sailing the seas for my emperor and my country. My adventures came to an end during the return journey of that final voyage in 1433. I lived to be about 62 years old. After my time, China's leaders decided to look inward, and the great sea voyages stopped. But my story shows how connected the world was, even centuries ago. Today, people remember me as a great explorer and diplomat who built bridges of friendship between China and many other nations, sailing farther than almost anyone of my time.
