Just want Archaeology?
Have you ever dug in a sandbox? Dig, dig, dig! Sometimes you find a lost toy. It is so exciting! I am like a big, big treasure hunt for the whole world. But my treasures are not shiny gold. My treasures are old things that tell stories. Stories about people from long, long ago. I find their toys and their cups and their houses. I am a secret keeper, and I love to share my secrets with you. I love showing people how tiny pieces of the past can tell a big, wonderful story about how people used to live and play.
Hello! My name is Archaeology! That is a big word, isn't it? Ar-chae-ol-o-gy. I help special people called archaeologists. They are like history detectives! A super long time ago, in the 6th century BCE, a king named Nabonidus wanted to learn about old buildings. So he started to dig, dig, dig to find them. Much later, in the year 79 CE, a big mountain called a volcano puffed out lots of soft gray ash. It covered a whole town called Pompeii, like a soft blanket. Shhh. The town slept for a very long time. Then, in the 1700s, helpers came and gently brushed the ash away. They found houses and colorful pictures and even round loaves of bread, all saved from that long-ago day. It was me, Archaeology, helping them find the story!
Today, I help the history detectives use special tools. They use little shovels to scoop the dirt. They use soft brushes to gently tickle the dust away. Swish, swish, swish. They might find an old clay pot for drinking water. Or a pointy stone tool for cutting. Or even the wall of a forgotten house! Every little piece is a clue. It helps us tell the story of people from long ago. I show you that they loved their families and played games, just like you do. I help connect everyone together in one big, happy story.
