The Story of Architecture
I am the roof over your head that keeps you dry from the warm rain. I am the walls of your bedroom that keep you cozy at night. I am the windows you peek through to say hello to the sunshine. I am in your tall school, your favorite library, and even the fun fort you build with blankets and pillows. I make special places for you to live, learn, and play. Do you know what I am. I am Architecture.
A very, very long time ago, way back around 10,000 BCE, people did not have houses like yours. They found cozy shelter in big, dark caves to stay safe and warm. But soon, they learned how to build their own homes. They used what they found all around them—strong wood from tall trees, sticky mud from the ground, and heavy stones from the hills. As people got better and better at building, they made amazing things. In a sunny place called ancient Egypt, around 2560 BCE, people used me to build giant pyramids that touched the big blue sky. They were learning to make places that were not just safe, but also beautiful and strong.
Today, I am everywhere you look. I am in the shape of your house and the colors of your school. I am in the fun slides at the playground and the tall buildings downtown. The people who use me to dream up and draw these wonderful places are called architects. They think about all the best ways to make buildings for families to be together and for friends to have fun. I help people build a happy, safe, and beautiful world, one building at a time. And maybe one day, you will use me to build something amazing, too.
