Hello, I am Banking. My story begins a very long time ago, long before the first coin was ever minted. Travel back with me to around 2000 BCE in a sun-drenched land called Mesopotamia. Here, farmers worked hard to grow wheat and barley. When they had a surplus harvest, more than they needed for their families, they needed a secure place to store it. The safest and most respected buildings were the temples. So, they would bring their extra grain to the temple, and the priests would act as guardians, keeping careful records on clay tablets of who deposited what. This was my very first job: safeguarding people's valuable resources. As civilizations grew, so did I. In ancient Greece and Rome, magnificent temples were not just places of worship, but also the most trusted locations to store gold, silver, and other precious items. People knew their wealth would be protected within those strong walls. It was during this time that I learned a new skill. The guardians of this wealth realized it could be put to work. They began to lend money to merchants who needed to buy goods for a long voyage, or to builders who needed funds to construct new buildings. This helped cities expand and trade to flourish across the Mediterranean. I was becoming a powerful engine for growth and progress.

My modern name comes from a much later time, during the Middle Ages in the bustling city-states of Italy. In the busy marketplaces, money changers would set up a simple bench to conduct their business. This bench was called a 'banco' in Italian, and it’s where my name, Banking, comes from. If a money changer was dishonest or went out of business, his bench would be broken, which is where we get the word 'bankrupt.' One of the most famous families to work with me during the Renaissance was the Medici family in Florence. Starting in the 14th century, they became masters of my craft. They were so skilled and trustworthy that they managed money for popes, kings, and powerful merchants all across Europe. Their success showed the world how organized and reliable banking could fuel art, science, and exploration. As the world grew even more connected, countries realized they needed a way to manage their national finances. This led to a monumental step in my journey: the creation of the first central bank. On July 27th, 1694, the Bank of England was established. It was my job to manage the government's money, issue banknotes, and ensure the entire country's financial system remained healthy. This was a huge step in making the economy strong and stable for everyone.

For most of my history, you had to visit a grand, imposing building with tall columns and marble floors to see me. But today, I am practically everywhere. My journey in the United States took a big leap forward on December 23rd, 1913, with the creation of the U.S. Federal Reserve System, which was designed to make me safer and more reliable for all Americans. But the biggest change has been technology. I have transformed from giant, handwritten ledgers to automated teller machines, or ATMs, that let you access your money day or night. Now, I fit right into your pocket. I am the app on your phone that helps your parents pay bills with a simple tap, the website that lets you check your savings, and the digital account where you might keep your allowance. I connect people all over the world, allowing someone in one country to easily buy something from another. Through all these incredible changes, one thing has remained the same since those ancient temples in Mesopotamia: I am built on the ancient and essential idea of trust.
