Banks and Banking

Where do you keep your most special treasures? Maybe you have a small, wooden box for the shiny shell you found at the beach, or a secret drawer for your favorite drawings. Everyone has something they want to keep safe. It’s a feeling as old as people themselves. Long before there were piggy banks or even coins, people had treasures they needed to protect, like precious seeds for the next harvest, strong tools, or baskets of grain. They needed a safe place, somewhere they could be sure their valuables wouldn't get lost or taken. Can you imagine a world where you had to carry all your important things with you all the time? It would be very difficult. That’s where I came in. I am not a building made of brick, or a vault with a heavy steel door. I am an idea. I am the promise that what you give for safekeeping will be there when you return. I am the feeling of trust. People gave that feeling a name. I am Banking.

My story started thousands of years ago, in a warm land called Mesopotamia around 2000 BCE. Farmers there worked hard all year to grow barley and wheat. When the harvest came, they had more grain than they could possibly use at once. They needed to store it safely for the winter. The safest, strongest buildings in the city were the temples. So, farmers would bring their extra grain to the temple, and the priests would guard it for them. The priests didn't have paper and pens, so they carefully carved records onto wet clay tablets, noting who brought what and how much. That was one of my first jobs: being a safe place for food. As centuries passed, people started using coins, and my job changed. In the busy marketplaces of Ancient Greece and Rome, you would have seen men sitting at tables helping merchants and travelers. They were money-changers, and they would swap coins from different kingdoms. My life took a very exciting turn during the Italian Renaissance. In beautiful cities like Florence, families like the famous Medici family became experts at managing money. They didn't just store it; they kept careful records in big books called ledgers and helped people use their money to build amazing things. It was here in Italy that I got my modern name. The money-changers often worked from long wooden benches. The Italian word for bench is ‘banca.’ Do you hear it? Banca. Bank. That’s me. I started to look more like I do today when the first modern bank, the Banco di San Giorgio, opened its doors in Genoa, Italy, in 1407. Then, on July 27th, 1694, a very important bank was created in London called the Bank of England. I was no longer just helping individuals; I was helping entire countries grow strong.

From clay tablets and wooden benches, I’ve certainly changed a lot. But my most important job is still the same: helping people turn their hard work into their dreams. Think about that new bicycle you really want, or the video game all your friends are playing. Where do you keep the birthday money you’re saving up for it? When you put your coins and bills in a safe place to save for later, you are using my big idea. I help your small savings grow into something bigger that you can enjoy. I do the same thing for grown-ups, but for even bigger dreams. I help a family save money, piece by piece, until they have enough to buy their very first house with a backyard to play in. I might give a loan, which is like borrowing money that you promise to pay back, to a baker who wants to open a shop that will fill the street with the warm smell of fresh bread. I can help someone start a bookstore filled with adventures waiting on every shelf. Today, you don't always see me as a big stone building. Sometimes I am a machine in a wall called an ATM, or an app on your parent’s phone that lets you move money with just a tap. But even with all this new technology, the simple, ancient idea is still right at my heart. I am still about trust. I am a partner for your plans, a helper for your goals, and a safe place for your dreams, big and small. I help you build your future, one dollar and one dream at a time.
