I am very, very old—older than piggy banks and even pockets. My story begins a long time ago, around 3000 BCE, in a sunny place called Mesopotamia. People there didn't have money, but they had important things like grain to make bread and sheep for woolly coats. I helped them keep track on clay tablets to make sure they had enough for everyone all year long. Then, around 600 BCE, people in a kingdom called Lydia had a brilliant idea: they made the first shiny coins. It was much easier to count coins than sheep, and I got a brand new job helping people plan with money. My name came much later, though. In the 15th century, people in France carried their coins in a little leather bag called a 'bougette.' By the 18th century in England, the person in charge of all the country's money would carry his financial plans in a similar bag. People started calling the plan itself a 'budget,' and that's me.

Today, I am more helpful than ever. I help families plan for big things, like a new house or a fun vacation, and small things, like pizza night or a trip to the movies. Think of me as your very own money superpower. I help you become the boss of your money, so it doesn't just disappear. You tell it where to go.
