Cell Division (Mitosis and Meiosis)

Have you ever wondered how you grow taller, bit by bit, every single day. Or how a little scrape on your knee magically heals all by itself. It’s not magic, it’s me. I am a constant, busy worker inside every living thing, from the tallest, greenest trees to the smallest ladybugs crawling on a leaf. I am always working, always building, and always fixing. I am your body's super-secret copy machine, making sure everything has just what it needs to grow big and strong. When one of your body's tiny building blocks gets old, I make a brand new one to take its place. I am Cell Division.

For a very, very long time, people had no idea I existed. That's because I am so tiny, you could never see me with just your eyes. I was a secret dance happening inside of everything that was alive. But then, in the 1600s, something amazing was invented: the microscope. It let people peek into a whole new world of teeny-tiny things. A curious scientist named Robert Hooke looked at a thin slice of cork under his microscope in the year 1665. He saw that it was made of thousands of little box-like shapes. He called them 'cells.' It was the first time anyone had ever seen the rooms where I do my work. Many years later, in the late 1800s, a man named Walther Flemming found a clever way to watch me. He used colorful dyes that made parts of the cell bright and easy to see. In 1882, he watched my little threads, which he called chromosomes, do a special dance. He saw them line up, make a perfect copy of themselves, and then pull apart as the cell split into two. He gave my amazing copy-dance a name: mitosis.

That same mitosis dance is happening inside of you right now. As you listen to this story, I am busy making new skin cells to replace old ones. I am helping your hair grow a little bit longer and making sure your body stays healthy and strong. But I have another special dance, too. This one is called meiosis. Meiosis is the dance I do to make the very special cells that grown-ups need to have babies. Instead of making an exact copy, my meiosis dance mixes up the instructions from the mom and the dad. This is what makes every single person in the world one-of-a-kind. It's why you have your own special smile and your own unique laugh. I am the reason life keeps going, from tiny seeds to big trees, and from little babies to grown-ups. I am the secret behind what makes you, you.
