The Language Without Words
Have you ever heard a song so good that your foot just starts tapping all on its own? Or felt so happy that you wanted to jump up and spin in a circle? Maybe you’ve felt a beat so strong it made your shoulders want to wiggle and bounce. That energy, that fizzing feeling that bubbles up inside you and has to come out through your hands, your feet, and your whole body, is me. Hello! I am Dance. I am the language you speak without a single word. I am the story you tell with a leap and a twirl. When you are too full of joy to stand still, I am there. When you want to share a feeling that words can’t quite capture, I am how you say it. I am a celebration, a memory, and a secret whispered from one heart to another through the rhythm of your body. Can you imagine a world where no one ever moved to music? It would be a very quiet and still place, wouldn't it? I am here to make sure the world is always full of motion and emotion, connecting people in a way that nothing else can.
I have been with humans for a very, very long time, almost since the beginning. You might think I am just for parties or stages, but my first steps were taken around campfires and in sacred places. If you could travel back in time, about 9,000 years ago, you could visit the Bhimbetka rock shelters in India. There, painted on the stone walls, you would see pictures of your ancestors, their bodies bent and arms reaching, telling stories and performing rituals with me. They didn't write their history in books yet; they painted it and they danced it. A little later, around 3300 BCE in Ancient Egypt, I was very important. I was part of grand ceremonies for the gods and goddesses, I helped people say goodbye at funerals, and I brought life to every big party along the Nile River. Then, in Ancient Greece, thinkers and athletes believed I was essential for a healthy mind and a strong body. I wasn't just for fun; I was part of their education. I took center stage in their amazing theatre performances and helped them honor their gods, especially Dionysus, the god of festivals and joy.
As time marched on, I changed my outfits and my steps, but my spirit stayed the same. In the grand courts of Renaissance Europe, I became very formal and fancy. Kings and queens in beautiful, heavy clothes learned precise steps to show how elegant and powerful they were. One person who loved me more than almost anyone was King Louis XIV of France. He was a king, but he was also a fantastic dancer. He believed I was so important that on March 30th, 1661, he created a special school just for me, the Académie Royale de Danse. This school helped create the beautiful, graceful art form you now know as ballet, with its pointed toes and incredible leaps. But while kings were dancing in Europe, I was alive all over the world in different ways. In Hawaii, I became the Hula, a powerful way to pass down stories and legends through the graceful movements of hands and hips. In villages across Africa, I was the heartbeat of the community, bringing everyone together to celebrate harvests, weddings, and the simple joy of being alive.
Now, look around you. I am everywhere! I am the powerful spins of a ballerina on a grand stage, but I am also the cool moves of a hip-hop crew on a city street. I am the elegant swirl of a ballroom couple and the joyful, stomping feet of a folk dance. And guess what? I am also the silly wiggle dance you do in your living room when no one is watching. I belong to everyone, no matter how old you are, where you come from, or whether you think you have “good rhythm.” I am a way to keep your body healthy and strong, a way to make new friends without saying a word, and a way to be brave by showing the world who you are. So the next time you feel that music in your heart and that tap in your feet, don't hold it in. Let me out. Let's dance together!
