Diamond

Imagine a tiny star, trapped inside a clear piece of glass, sparkling with all the colors of the rainbow when the light hits it just right. I was born deep, deep inside the Earth, where it was super hot and everything was being squeezed together very tightly. This big squeeze, called pressure, made me the hardest, toughest thing in all of nature. I am so strong that almost nothing can scratch me. For thousands of years, I slept in the dark, waiting. I am a little piece of forever, a sparkle of strength that has been on a very long journey. You can call me Diamond.

My story with people begins a very, very long time ago, around the 4th century BCE, in a country called India. People found me sparkling in the cool water of rivers. They picked me up and were amazed. They thought I must be a piece of a star that had fallen from the sky or maybe even a tear from a god. They believed I could protect them from harm, so they kept me as a special protective charm. Later, merchants who traveled to faraway lands carried me with them. I ended up in Europe, and in the 1300s, kings and queens decided I was perfect for their shiny crowns and jewelry. For a long time, India was the only place to find me, which made me very rare. But then, in 1725, some of my cousins were discovered in Brazil. And in the 1860s, a huge part of my family was found in South Africa. Suddenly, more people could see my sparkle.

But I am more than just a pretty face that sparkles in a ring or a necklace. My incredible strength gives me very important jobs to do. Because I am so hard, tiny pieces of me are put on the tips of special tools. These tools can cut through the hardest things you can imagine, like giant rocks and strong metal. I help workers build towering skyscrapers that reach for the clouds. I even help doctors with special, precise tools that need a very sharp and steady edge. My journey from deep inside the Earth, where I was made from pressure and time, shows how something amazing can be created under tough conditions.
