Ecosystem Engineer

Who is pat-pat-patting mud with their tiny paws. Who is stacking sticks in the river to make a big, splashy pond. A fuzzy animal with a big, flat tail is making a brand-new home. Who helps them do that. I do. I help animals build amazing things. It’s my special job. I am an Ecosystem Engineer. That is a big, fancy name for an animal helper that builds homes for other little creatures. I help them change the world around them, one stick, one tunnel, one web at a time, making it a better place for everyone.

My super-helpers are everywhere. Beavers are my wonderful builders. They make dams that create new ponds where little fish can swim and happy frogs can hop. Prairie dogs are my diggers. They dig deep, long tunnels under the ground. These tunnels become safe, cozy homes for lizards and bugs to hide in. For a long, long time, people saw these amazing animal builders working hard, but they didn't have a special name for what they did. Then, in the year 1994, some very smart scientists saw how important my animal builders were. Their names were Clive, John, and Moshe, and they decided I needed a name. They called me an Ecosystem Engineer, and they told everyone how my animal helpers make the world healthy.

You can find me working everywhere you look. My animal builders are always busy making the world a wonderful and cozy place for all the creatures who live here. You can look for my work when you go outside. Look up high in a tree. Do you see a bird’s nest made of twigs and soft fluff. That is me. Look in a quiet corner of a room. Do you see a shiny spider’s web. That is me, too. Every single time you see an animal building a home, you are seeing me, an Ecosystem Engineer, making our world healthier and happier for us all.
