The story

The Earth's Cozy Blanket

Have you ever snuggled under a big, soft blanket on a chilly day. I am just like that, but I am a blanket for the whole world. You can’t see me, but I am always here, wrapping the Earth in a warm hug. I catch the yellow sunshine and hold it close to keep our world nice and toasty. This helps the pretty flowers grow tall and gives the birds a warm place to sing their songs. I make sure it is the perfect temperature for you to run and play outside in the green grass every single day.

For a very, very long time, people wondered how the world stayed so comfy and warm. A curious man with a big, bright mind named Joseph Fourier thought about this way back in the year 1824. He looked at the blue sky and felt the warm sun on his face, and he had a super smart idea. He said I was like the glass walls of a little house for plants, which is called a greenhouse. The glass lets the sunshine in but doesn't let all the warmth out. That's me. Because of his idea, people finally gave me my special name. I am the Greenhouse Effect. It’s like being a warm house for the whole world.

My job is super important. Without my warm hug, the Earth would be very, very cold. It would be a giant ice cube. Brrr. No one could play outside, and the flowers would not be able to grow. I work very hard to keep our world not too hot, and not too cold. I keep it just right. Grown-ups are learning how to help me do my job best. They are helping me keep our world perfectly cozy so that everyone, all the animals, and all the plants can be happy and healthy together for a long, long time.
