Just want Herbivore?
CRUNCH. A bright green leaf disappears into a hungry caterpillar’s mouth. SQUISH. A sweet, juicy berry is plucked by a little rabbit. In a big, grassy field, an elephant uses its long trunk to pull down a tasty branch. All over the world, animals are busy nibbling, munching, and chewing. They spend all day looking for delicious plants to eat, from the tiniest clovers to the tallest trees. I am the reason these animals love their veggie meals. Do you know who I am? Hello. I am Herbivore, which is just a fancy way of saying 'plant-eater'.
My story is very, very old. I was here on Earth long before any people were. The first animals who lived on land and ate only plants appeared about 420 million years ago, during a time scientists call the Silurian period. The world was a very different place back then. Millions of years later, some of my biggest and most famous friends showed up. the dinosaurs. Imagine a huge Brachiosaurus with a neck so long it could snack on leaves from the very top of a tree. They were some of the biggest herbivores that ever lived. For a long time, people just watched animals and noticed what they ate. Over 2,000 years ago, a very curious man in Greece named Aristotle studied nature and wrote down which animals ate grass and which ones ate meat. He was one of the first people to write about me. But I didn't get my official name until much later. Around the year 1830, a scientist named Charles Lyell started using the word 'Herbivore' in his books. He wanted one special, scientific name for all the plant-eaters in the world, so everyone would know exactly what he meant.

Today, you can see me at work everywhere you look. A cow chewing grass in a pasture is a herbivore. A squirrel burying an acorn in your backyard is a herbivore. Even a pet guinea pig nibbling on a piece of carrot is one of my pals. Being a herbivore is a super important job in nature. When animals eat fruits, they carry the seeds inside them to new places, which helps new plants and trees grow all over. They also help keep forests and fields from getting too overgrown by trimming the plants. I am a key part of what is called the food chain. I take the amazing energy that plants get from the sun and turn it into energy for my animal friends. So every time you see a deer nibbling a leaf or a bee visiting a flower, you are seeing a herbivore doing its wonderful job of keeping our world healthy and growing strong.
