The River of Stories
Have you ever felt a connection to everything around you—the flowing river, the strong mountain, the animals, and all the people in your family. I am that feeling of connection. I don't have a single starting day, because I grew slowly, like a giant banyan tree, over thousands of years. My story begins with the people who lived near the mighty Indus River more than 4,000 years ago, around the 3rd millennium BCE. They saw the world as a magical place. Before anyone wrote my name down, I was there in their songs, their respect for nature, and the way they lived. I am one of the oldest ways of life on Earth, and many people call me Hinduism, or by my traditional name, Sanatana Dharma, which means the 'eternal way'.
As people learned more about the world, they wanted to share their ideas. Between 1500 BCE and 500 BCE, wise teachers and poets created beautiful songs and poems to explain me. These are called the Vedas, my oldest and most special books. The Vedas are filled with big ideas. One is called Dharma, which is all about doing your duty and being a good person. Another is Karma, the idea that every kind thing you do sends more kindness out into the world. I also teach about Samsara, the great circle of life, where everything is born, lives, and is born again. I have many stories about gods and goddesses who show us how to be brave, wise, and loving. You might hear about Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver, and Shiva the transformer. They are all different ways of understanding one great, all-powerful spirit that connects everything, called Brahman.
Today, I am a vibrant part of life for over a billion people. You can see me in the joyful celebration of Diwali, the festival of lights, where families light clay lamps called diyas to show that good will always win over darkness. You can feel my playful spirit during Holi, the festival of colors, when people laugh and cover each other in bright powders. I am in the delicious foods people share, the beautiful temples they build, and the respect they show for all living things, from the smallest ant to the gentle cow. I remind people that there are many paths to being good and that every person's journey is special. I continue to inspire people to live with kindness, find joy in family, and see the wonder of the universe in their own hearts.
