Have you ever packed a suitcase for a long trip? Imagine packing up your favorite toys, your coziest blanket, and all your memories, not just for a vacation, but for a new life in a brand-new place. I am that feeling of excitement, and maybe a little bit of nervousness, when you say goodbye to one home to find another. I am the journey that carries families across big blue oceans and over tall, bumpy mountains. I am the adventure of starting over, of finding a new place to play, learn, and grow. For thousands and thousands of years, I have whispered to people, 'There is a new world waiting for you.' Sometimes the journey is hard, and sometimes it's full of happy songs. But it is always full of hope for something wonderful. Hello! My name is Immigration.

I am the idea of moving to a new country to live, and I've been around for as long as there have been people. That's a very, very long time. Way back in the past, the first humans were explorers, and I was with them as they followed herds of woolly mammoths to find food and warmer places to live. I helped them cross giant bridges of ice to discover new parts of the world. Much, much later, people started traveling on big ships to find new opportunities and a safe place to call home. In a country called America, many families sailed to a special place called Ellis Island in New York. Starting on January 1st, 1892, millions of people saw the big, green Statue of Liberty for the first time as they arrived. She looked like a giant welcome sign. They brought their favorite recipes for yummy food, special songs from their grandmothers, and wonderful stories with them. It wasn't always easy to learn a new language or make new friends in a strange place. But I was there, reminding them that every new day was part of an amazing adventure full of hope.

When people bring their lives to a new country, they share the best parts of their old home, like a wonderful gift. Because of me, you might eat yummy pizza that was first made in Italy, or tacos with recipes from Mexico. You might dance to music with exciting rhythms from Africa or hear amazing folktales from Ireland. I help mix all these beautiful cultures together, like adding new, bright colors to a giant painting that everyone gets to enjoy. I make our neighborhoods more interesting, our food more delicious, and our world a bigger, friendlier place. I am the promise of a new beginning and the joy of sharing our stories with one another. I am happening all around you, every single day, helping new friends find each other and making the world more colorful.
