IUCN Endangered Species

Hello. You might not know my name, but I am a very special kind of list. I am like a caring friend who watches over all the amazing animals and plants on our planet. I see the big, gentle whales swimming in the ocean and the colorful parrots flying through the jungle. For a long time, I noticed something worrying. Some animal families were getting smaller and smaller. It was like they were slowly disappearing, and I was afraid no one would see it happening. The world was full of wonderful creatures, but their homes were shrinking and their futures were becoming uncertain. I wished I had a voice to tell everyone to look closer and see the quiet goodbyes that were happening all around them.

But then, something wonderful happened. Kind people all over the world started to notice, too. A group of scientists and nature lovers got together in a place called Fontainebleau, France, way back on October 5th, 1948. They formed a team called the International Union for Conservation of Nature, or IUCN for short. They wanted to be superheroes for nature. They knew they needed a special tool to help them figure out which creatures needed them the most, so in 1964, they created me. I am the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. I'm not a boring list; I’m like a traffic light for animals. Some animals are in the 'green' zone, which means they are safe and sound. Others are in the 'yellow' zone, which means we need to be careful and watch over them. And some are in the 'red' zone, which means they are 'Endangered' and need our help right away. It's a very important job to hold all this information.

My most important job is to tell people which animals and plants need our help the most. When a beautiful animal like the giant panda or the snow leopard is on my 'Endangered' list, it’s a signal for everyone to work together. It tells people to protect their homes in the forest and mountains, make sure they have enough food to eat, and keep them safe from harm. And the best part is, it works. Because people listened to me, some animals have moved from the red zone back to the yellow zone. I am not a sad list; I am a list full of hope. I show that when we care and work together, we can protect all the wonderful creatures we share our world with. Every time an animal becomes safer, I feel like I am shining a little brighter for everyone to see.
