I Am Money
Do you have a favorite toy. What if your friend has a toy that you really want to play with. You could trade your toy for their toy. That is what I help people do. A long time ago, I wasn't a coin or a paper bill. I was a pretty, swirly seashell found on the beach. Sometimes I was a smooth, gray stone that felt nice in your hand. People would trade me for things they needed. I have a special name. I am Money.
It was hard to trade big things. Imagine trying to trade a giant pile of yellow bananas for a new pair of shoes. That is very tricky. So people decided to use special items that everyone agreed were important. A long, long, long time ago, around 1200 BCE, people in a place called China used pretty cowrie shells. They were small and easy to carry. Then, things changed. In a faraway kingdom called Lydia, way back around 600 BCE, people made the very first shiny metal coins. They would go jingle-jangle in your pocket. This made buying and selling things much easier for everyone.
Today, you can see me everywhere. I can be a shiny, round coin you put in your piggy bank. I can be a piece of colorful paper with pictures on it. Sometimes, I am just a number you see on a bright screen. But I still do the same important job. I help families buy yummy food to eat at the dinner table. I help them buy fun toys to play with and cozy homes to live in. I am a helper. I help people share and care for each other, making the world a nice place to be.
