The story

The Superpower Team

Have you ever stopped to watch a tiny, brilliant red ladybug crawl up a bright green leaf. Have you ever closed your eyes and just listened to the whisper of the wind as it rustles through the trees. Can you imagine the feeling of cool, squishy mud between your toes after a rainstorm. I am the reason you can experience all of that. I am there when you walk into a kitchen and smell the warm, sweet scent of chocolate chip cookies baking in the oven. I am also there when you bite into a zesty yellow lemon and your mouth puckers from the sour taste. I am the messenger who tells your brain that a fuzzy blanket is soft, a stovetop is hot, a song is loud, or a whisper is quiet. You might think I am just one thing, but I am actually a whole team of helpers, working together every second of the day. Each member of my team has a special job, but we are always sharing information to give you a full picture of what’s happening. We are your built-in explorers. I am your Five Senses—your own built-in team of superpowers for exploring everything around you.

For thousands and thousands of years, people used me every day without really stopping to think about how I worked. I was just a part of life, like breathing or sleeping. But then, a man with a fantastically curious mind came along. His name was Aristotle, and he lived in a place called ancient Greece more than two thousand years ago, during the 4th century BCE. Aristotle was a great thinker and an even better observer. He loved to walk around, paying close attention to the world and writing down everything he noticed about people, animals, and nature. He asked big questions about everything, including how humans knew what was going on around them. Around the year 350 BCE, he wrote a very important book called 'On the Soul'. In that book, he did something simple but powerful. He was one of the very first people to officially write down that humans have five main ways of sensing the world. He gave my team members their famous names: sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. His idea was so clear and made so much sense that it stuck. People all over the world started talking about me as a team of five, all thanks to Aristotle. By giving my parts names and organizing them, he gave everyone the tools to start asking bigger questions about the amazing connection between your body, your brain, and the world.

So what am I up to today. I am busier than ever. I am your personal alarm system. I am the smell of smoke that warns you of a fire or the sound of an ambulance siren telling you to be careful. I am also your connection to other people. I am the feeling of a high-five after a great game, the taste of a birthday cake shared with your family, and the warmth of a hug from someone you love. I help you learn in school when you see the words in a book or feel the texture of a science experiment. Scientists today are still fascinated by me. They have even discovered that I have some other hidden teammates, like your amazing sense of balance that keeps you from tipping over. I am your personal guide to the universe, always ready to help you discover something new, fun, and exciting. Every single day is an adventure when you see, hear, smell, taste, and touch the world with wonder.
