The story

A Wonder Chosen by the World

Have you ever looked at a photograph of a place so incredible it barely seems real. Imagine a stone wall, like a great serpent, slithering across the ridges of rugged mountains for thousands of miles. Picture a secret city hidden in a desert canyon, its magnificent temples and tombs carved directly from cliffs of rose-colored rock. Think of a colossal statue of a man, standing atop a mountain with arms outstretched, embracing an entire city below. For centuries, people have marveled at such creations, wondering which are the most spectacular of all. Long ago, ancient travelers and scholars made a list of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, celebrating the greatest monuments of their time. But time is a powerful force. Millennia passed, and by the beginning of the 21st century, only one of those original wonders, the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt, still stood. This left the world with a grand and exciting question: what are the greatest wonders we can see today, and who should get to decide. That is where I come in. Hello. I'm not a building or a statue. I am an idea, a worldwide vote, a grand search to answer that very question. I am the New Seven Wonders of the World.

My story begins with a man named Bernard Weber, a Swiss-Canadian filmmaker and adventurer who had a truly global idea. In the year 2000, he realized that for the first time in history, technology could unite the entire planet in a single conversation. He envisioned a new list of wonders, not chosen by a single historian, but by millions of ordinary people from every country. His organization, the New7Wonders Foundation, began the monumental task of creating a list of 200 amazing monuments from all over the globe. This was a modern quest, and its tools were not ships and compasses, but the internet and the telephone. The call went out across the world: What places inspire you. What structures represent the greatest achievements of human civilization. The response was overwhelming. Votes began pouring in, over one hundred million of them. A teenager in South Korea could vote for the same ancient city as a grandmother in Argentina. It was the largest poll the world had ever seen. The excitement was electric as the list of 200 was carefully narrowed down to 77, and then to a final 21 candidates. The whole world watched and waited, debating which sites truly deserved a place on the final list. The anticipation built for years, leading to one specific, perfectly chosen date for the grand announcement: July 7th, 2007, or 07/07/07.

On that historic day in Lisbon, Portugal, the results were finally revealed to a global audience. The seven winners, chosen by the people of the world, were announced. They were the Great Wall of China, a symbol of perseverance. Petra in Jordan, the city half as old as time. The Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil, a beacon of peace. Machu Picchu in Peru, the mysterious city in the clouds. Chichén Itzá in Mexico, the brilliant pyramid of the Maya. The Colosseum in Rome, an arena echoing with history. And the Taj Mahal in India, a breathtaking monument to love. Because its ancient counterpart was the only one left standing, the Great Pyramid of Giza was given a special honorary status, a nod to its timeless grandeur. But I am more than just a list of popular tourist destinations. I am a snapshot of what humanity values across all cultures: creativity, dedication, artistry, and the desire to build something that lasts forever. I exist to remind you that the legacy of human genius is all around us, connecting us across vast distances and thousands of years. I am an invitation to explore, to learn, and to be inspired, and perhaps even to find the next great wonder in your own world.
