The Flower's Secret Handshake
Have you ever wondered how a little flower turns into a big, red strawberry. It is like a secret delivery service for plants, and I help make it happen. I send special yellow dust from one flower to another. It is like a tiny handshake that says, 'Hello, flower. Let's make something yummy'. Busy bees and fluttery butterflies are my helpers. They carry the soft dust on their fuzzy legs. The wind helps too, blowing the dust like magic sprinkles through the air. It is a very important job, helping flowers make friends with each other.
Guess what my name is. I am Pollination. That is a big word for a very big job. For a long, long time, people saw pretty flowers and ate yummy fruits, but they did not know about me. It was a big secret. A long time ago, even before your grandparents were born, farmers in warm, sunny lands learned how to help me. Around the 9th century BCE, they saw that date trees needed help making sweet dates. They would take a soft brush and gently tickle one tree with dust from another. They were helping me do my job. That yellow dust is called pollen. When pollen travels from one flower to another, it helps the flower make a tiny seed. And what does a seed do. It grows into a brand new plant or a delicious fruit for you to eat.
I help make so many of your favorite foods. Do you like crunchy apples. Or sweet strawberries. Or big, orange pumpkins. I help make all of those. Without me, our world would not have as many pretty flowers to smell or tasty fruits to munch on. I help the whole world bloom with bright colors and yummy snacks. So, the next time you see a fuzzy bee buzzing on a bright flower, you can wave hello. You are watching me, Pollination, at work. You can even whisper, 'Thank you, bee, for helping make my food'.
