Seagrass

The world is quiet and blue down here. I sway gently under the sparkly water, back and forth, back and forth. Tickly little fish swim all around my long, green leaves. I am like a soft, grassy field hidden in the ocean, a secret playground for my friends. Tiny sea creatures love to play hide-and-seek with me all day long. I am a cozy, safe place. Can you guess who I am?

Surprise. I'm Seagrass. I'm not the grass you see in a park. I am a special flowering plant that lives underwater. I have been growing in the salty seas since the time of the dinosaurs, a very, very long time ago, around 100 million years ago. I am a very busy plant. My roots wiggle deep into the sandy floor to hold it all together, like little hands holding onto a blanket. My long leaves sway in the water and make it clean and clear for all my friends to see. I am also a yummy snack for big, gentle manatees and green sea turtles. Munch, munch, munch. And I am a safe, cozy home for baby fish and shy little seahorses to hide in. They feel safe sleeping in my leaves.

I don't just help my ocean friends; I help you, too. My strong roots hold the sand on the beach and keep it from washing away when big waves come to splash. This keeps the beach safe for you to build sandcastles. People have known for a very long time that I am a helpful friend. Today, scientists who study the big blue ocean know that my underwater meadows are super important for keeping our world healthy. By taking care of the ocean, you help take care of me. And then I can keep being a happy, healthy home for all my sea friends.
