Just want Seagrass?
Imagine you are floating in the warm, sunny ocean, with little waves gently rocking you back and forth. If you peek down below the sparkling surface, you might see a beautiful meadow swaying in the water. It looks like long, green ribbons dancing in a secret garden. I am a cozy home for tiny seahorses that cling to my leaves with their curly tails, and I am a yummy snack for big, gentle manatees that munch on me like I'm a salad. You might think I am just seaweed, but I am very different. I have roots that hold me tight to the sandy floor, long stems, and even tiny flowers that bloom right here under the waves. I am a real plant, and my name is Seagrass.
I am a very, very old friend to the Earth. My first family members, my ancestors, started growing in the ocean around 100 million years ago. That was during a time called the Cretaceous Period, when giant dinosaurs were stomping around on the land. For thousands of years, people have known that I am a great helper. Way back in the 14th century, people in a country called the Netherlands used my dried leaves to build strong walls called dikes, which helped keep the ocean from flooding their towns. Other people used to stuff me into their mattresses to make them soft and comfortable for sleeping, or they would pack me into their walls to help keep their homes warm in the winter. But my most important job has always been for my ocean friends. My roots spread out like a net, trapping dirt and mud. This makes the water wonderfully clean and clear for everyone who lives here.
The Underwater Meadow

Today, I have some amazing superpowers that help the whole planet. My underwater meadows are like safe playgrounds, or nurseries, where baby fish can hide from bigger fish and grow up strong. I am also a giant salad bar for hungry animals like green sea turtles, who swim for miles just to munch on my tasty leaves. But my biggest superpower is something you cannot even see. I help keep the Earth healthy by breathing in a gas called carbon dioxide. I pull it out of the water and store it safely in my roots, deep under the sand. This helps keep our world from getting too warm. So, the next time you think of the big blue ocean, I hope you will remember my waving green meadows. Protecting me helps protect all the amazing sea creatures and our whole beautiful planet.
