The story

The Strawberry's Sweet Story

Have you ever found a tiny, bright red jewel hiding in the grass on a summer day. That might be me. I smell as sweet as candy and I’m shaped a little like a heart. But I have a funny secret… I wear my seeds on the outside. Most fruits hide their seeds inside, but I show my tiny golden freckles to the whole world. I love to peek out from under my green leafy hat and soak up the sunshine. It feels so nice and warm. Have you figured out my name yet. Can you guess who I am. That’s right. I am the Strawberry.

My family has a very long and exciting story. Thousands of years ago, my ancestors were tiny wild berries, much smaller than I am today. The ancient Romans found us in the woods way back around 234 BCE and thought we were a special treat. They loved our bright color and sweet taste. Later, during a time called the Middle Ages, around the 14th century, people in Europe started planting my wild relatives in their gardens. Monks especially liked to grow us because we were so pretty. But we were still very small. The big change happened when brave explorers sailed their big ships across the wide ocean to the Americas in the 1500s. There, they met my bigger, bolder cousins. One of my cousins was from North America, and another was from South America, and they were both brought all the way back to Europe. Then, in a beautiful garden in France around the 1750s, a happy accident happened. A gardener planted my two cousins near each other. Bees buzzed between their flowers, and they mixed together to create a brand-new kind of strawberry—me. I was bigger, juicier, and sweeter than any strawberry before.

Today, I get to be a part of your happy moments. You can find me sitting on top of yummy birthday cakes, blended into cool and creamy smoothies, or floating in your bowl of cereal in the morning. I am a star at picnics and a favorite snack to eat on a warm day, especially when dipped in chocolate. My story is about how different parts of the world can come together to make something new and wonderful. From a tiny berry hiding in the forest to the sweet friend you know today, I’ve had quite a journey. So next time you taste my sweet, juicy flavor, remember the amazing adventure I took from faraway lands just to get to you.
