The story

The Sandy Path of Friends

Imagine a big, big place with warm sand everywhere. The sun shines so bright. The sand stretches on and on, like a giant sandbox. In this sandy place, I was a special secret. I was a long, wiggly path that connected friends who lived very, very far apart. I helped them share their favorite treasures with each other. It was like a big, long playdate that went across the sand. People would follow me to find their friends and bring them wonderful gifts. I am a very special path, and my name is the Trans-Saharan Trade.

How did people travel on my sandy path. They had amazing helpers. Big, tall animals with lumpy backs called camels. Camels are like ships that sail on the sand. They could walk for a long, long time without needing a drink of water. This all started a very, very long time ago, around the 8th century. The camels carried special things. From the north, they brought sparkly salt that was as special as your favorite toy. From the south, they carried shiny, bright gold that glittered in the sun. I was a very busy path for many, many years. I helped big, happy kingdoms like the Mali Empire get lots of treasures and grow strong. I loved hearing the soft padding of the camels' feet on my sand.

But the camels carried more than just sparkly salt and shiny gold. They carried happy things you can't even hold. They brought new songs to sing and exciting stories to tell. People from different places met on my path and shared their ideas, just like you share your drawings with a friend. Because of me, people who lived far apart learned how to do new things from each other. They became friends. Today, people travel in cars and airplanes, but I am a happy memory. I remind everyone that sharing with friends, no matter how far away they are, is a wonderful adventure that helps us all.
