The story

A Trip to the Moon

Before you knew my name, you knew my feeling. Imagine sitting in a dark room, the only sound a gentle whirring and the soft notes of a piano. Suddenly, a rectangle of light flickers to life on a white screen. I am that light. I am a story made of thousands of tiny pictures, each one a moment frozen in time, strung together on a long ribbon of celluloid. I have no spoken words, but I tell a grand tale in black and white. You see gentlemen with long robes and pointy hats, peering through telescopes. You see them gathered around a giant cannon aimed at the sky. And you see the Moon, not as a cold rock, but as a friendly face with a mischievous twinkle in its eye. I am a dream you can watch with your eyes open. I am 'A Trip to the Moon,' one of the very first science fiction films ever made.

My creator was a man named Georges Méliès, but he was more of a magician than a filmmaker. In 1902, in a glass studio that looked like a giant greenhouse in Montreuil, just outside Paris, he brought me to life. Georges did everything. He imagined my story, built my fantastical sets, designed the strange costumes, and even played one of the main characters. He used his camera like a magic wand. He would stop filming, move an actor or a prop, and start again, making things magically appear or disappear. This trick, called a substitution splice, was his specialty. He built my Moon's surface, my giant mushrooms, and my insect-like moon-creatures, the Selenites, all by hand. It wasn't just filmmaking; it was invention. For very special showings, he even had a team of artists, led by a woman named Elisabeth Thuillier, paint every single one of my frames by hand, giving me brilliant, otherworldly colors. This was an incredible amount of work, as a single print of me contained over 13,000 individual frames to color.

My story unfolds like a fantastic adventure. A group of brave astronomers build a capsule shaped like a bullet. They climb inside, and then—WHOOSH.—a colossal cannon fires them into space. My most famous moment is when their capsule sails through the stars and lands right in the eye of the Man in the Moon. It makes him wince, but he doesn't seem to mind too much. The astronomers explore my strange lunar world, discovering enormous mushrooms that burst into puffs of smoke and narrowly escaping the crab-like Selenites who live underground. When I was first shown to audiences on September 1st, 1902, people had never seen anything like me. They gasped, cheered, and felt they had truly traveled to another world. At a time when movies were mostly short clips of everyday events, like a train arriving at a station, I was a revelation. I was a global sensation, proof that a movie could be more than just a recording of real life; it could be a portal to the imagination.

For many years, my beautiful hand-colored versions were thought to be lost forever, faded into history. Many of my copies were melted down to recover the silver in the film stock. But in 1993, a single, badly damaged copy was found in Barcelona, Spain. It was a miracle. It took a team of experts nearly two decades of careful, painstaking work, but I was restored to my original, colorful glory. I premiered again at the Cannes Film Festival in 2011, more than a century after I was born, looking as vibrant as ever. I may be a silent film from a time long ago, but my story continues to inspire. I showed filmmakers that their only limit was their imagination. Every science fiction movie you see today, with its spaceships, aliens, and distant planets, owes a little something to my short, magical journey. I am a reminder that no matter how much time passes, the human dream of reaching for the stars never gets old. I live in that flicker of light, inviting you to look up at the sky and wonder, 'What if?'
