The story

The Story of Astérix the Gaul

Before I was a person, I was a whisper of an idea. Imagine the year 50 BCE in a land called Gaul, which is now modern-day France. The mighty Roman Empire, led by Julius Caesar, had taken over almost everything. Roman soldiers marched everywhere. But in Paris, in the minds of two very clever men, a spark of defiance was born. They dreamed of one small village that was still free, filled with brave and funny people who refused to give up. At the very center of that idea was someone small but super clever and fast. That someone was me.

My creators, a writer named René Goscinny and an artist named Albert Uderzo, brought me to life. I am Astérix. They gave me my famous winged helmet, a bushy yellow mustache, and a mind full of tricky plans. Best of all, they gave me a friend named Obelix, who is super strong, loves to eat wild boar, and is always by my side. On October 29th, 1959, I finally leaped into the world in the pages of a French magazine called Pilote. René wrote my hilarious adventures, and Albert drew them with so much energy it felt like I could jump right off the page. We lived in a village protected by a secret weapon: a magic potion made by our druid, Getafix, that gave us superhuman strength for a short time.

In 1961, my very first book was published for everyone to read, and it was called Astérix the Gaul. That was my first big test. The Romans were desperate to discover the secret of our magic potion, so they captured poor Getafix. It was up to me to sneak into their camp and rescue him. Can you imagine trying to outsmart an entire Roman army? I had to prove that being small doesn't matter when you have a big brain and a lot of courage. Of course, a little sip of the magic potion helped too. That book was just the beginning of my many troubles with the Romans, and they never seemed to learn their lesson.

Obelix and I didn't just stay in our village, though. My creators sent us on adventures all over the known world. We traveled to amazing places throughout the 1960s and 1970s. We sailed to Egypt and helped Queen Cleopatra build a magnificent palace in record time. We crossed the sea to Britain and accidentally introduced them to tea when we dropped some special herbs into hot water. We even went to the heart of the enemy's home, Rome itself, to compete in the Olympic Games. Each journey was filled with silly jokes, meeting new friends, and finding new ways to trick the Romans. The stories showed that no matter where you go, friendship and a good laugh are powerful everywhere.

A sad day came for all of us on November 5th, 1977. My writer, the brilliant René Goscinny, passed away. He was the one who gave me my voice and my funny thoughts. Everyone was heartbroken and worried that my adventures were over for good. But my other creator, Albert Uderzo, who drew all my pictures, loved our stories too much to let them end. He bravely decided to continue on his own. He began writing my new adventures as well as drawing them, making sure my spirit of fun and friendship would carry on for children everywhere to enjoy.

Today, I am more than 60 years old, but I don't feel a day over 20. Even though my first creators are no longer with us, a new team of writers and artists started making my stories in 2013, so my adventures continue. I’ve starred in animated movies and live-action films. There is even a real theme park in France, Parc Astérix, that opened in 1989 where you can visit my village and meet my friends. For all these years, I’ve been here to remind people that even the smallest person can have the biggest heart. With good friends by your side, you can face any challenge. I hope my stories always make you laugh and inspire you to find that little bit of magic potion—your own courage—inside yourself.
