I Am the Brooklyn Bridge

I stretch my long back over a big, sparkly river. It feels so good to reach from one side to the other. All day long, little boats sail right underneath me, and I watch them go by. I feel a tickle as tiny cars, big buses, and friendly people walk across my back. I have two tall stone towers that reach up, up, up to the sky, trying to touch the fluffy clouds. My strong wires are like a giant, shiny spiderweb, and they glow like gold when the sun touches them. I love feeling the warm sun and the cool breeze. I am the Brooklyn Bridge.

I was once a big, wonderful dream in a family's heart. They wanted to connect two busy cities so friends could visit each other easily. A man named John Roebling first imagined me, and the hard work to build me began on January 3rd, 1869. When he couldn't finish, his son Washington and his amazing wife Emily took over the big job. For many years, brave workers built my strong stone feet deep, deep down in the water. They carefully spun my steel wires, over and over, to make me safe and strong for everyone. They built me with so much love.

My favorite day ever was my opening day on May 24th, 1883. Everyone was so happy to see me. The very first person to ride across me was the wonderful Emily Roebling, sitting in a fancy carriage. She waved to everyone. From that day on, I have been busy helping people. Every single day, I connect friends and families. At night, I love to watch all the city lights twinkle around me like little stars. I stand tall and strong, a happy reminder that big dreams can bring everyone closer together and connect the world.
