The Secret Dancing Game

Twang, twang, twang. That's the sound of a happy string singing a song. Clap, clap, clap. Can you hear the hands making music, too? I love to spin around and twirl down low, close to the ground. Whee. I kick my legs way up high, but I never touch anyone. It’s a secret game, a playful dance. I am a game, a dance, and a secret all rolled into one. I make everyone smile and move their feet. I am a happy feeling that you can share with your friends.

I am Capoeira. Hello. I was born in a very sunny and warm land called Brazil. That was a long, long, long time ago, starting in the 16th century. Some very strong and brave people were brought to Brazil from Africa. They missed their homes, and sometimes they felt sad. They wanted a way to feel strong, happy, and free. So, they created me. They practiced their powerful kicks and clever spins, but they made it look like a beautiful dance. They would sing and play music so no one would guess their secret game. I was their special way to remember how strong they were and to share joy together.

Today, I am a game for everyone. Friends make a big, happy circle called a 'roda.' They clap their hands and sing happy songs. Inside the circle, two friends play. They twirl and spin and kick, but it’s not a fight. It is like they are talking with their bodies, asking questions and giving answers with their moves. It is a game of smiles. I am a way for friends all over the world to play, sing, and dance together. We share amazing moves and big, happy smiles.
