The story

The Secret of the Indus Script

Imagine being a secret whispered from a time long ago. I am not a person, but a collection of special pictures and shapes. Sometimes I was carefully pressed into soft, wet clay. Other times, I was carved into smooth, tiny stones. I am made of pictures of all sorts of things. You might see a strong bull, a swimming fish, or even an animal that looks like a unicorn. There are also mysterious lines and geometric patterns that are part of my language. For thousands of years, people have looked at me and wondered what stories I hold. I am a puzzle from the past. I am the Indus Script.

My story begins in a busy and amazing place called the Indus Valley Civilization, more than 4,000 years ago. The people who lived there between 2600 BCE and 1900 BCE were very clever. They built big cities with neat houses made of bricks and streets that were straight and wide. They had busy marketplaces where they traded beautiful beads, pottery, and other goods. These were my creators. They carved my symbols onto tiny stone seals, which were like little stamps. They would press these seals into clay tags on bundles of goods, maybe to show who owned them or where they were going. Some people think I was used for special ceremonies, too. The funny thing is, nobody today knows for sure what my symbols mean or what my creators were saying. That’s what makes me such a fun puzzle from history. I hold the secrets of their world.

After many, many years, the great cities where I lived grew quiet. The bustling marketplaces emptied, and the clever people moved away. Slowly, dust and sand blew over everything, and the brick buildings crumbled. I was buried deep underground and fell into a long, quiet sleep for thousands of years. I kept all my secrets safe while the world above changed completely. Then, one day, starting in the 1800s, curious people called archaeologists began to explore the area. Archaeologists are like history detectives. They carefully dug into the earth and, to their surprise, they found the lost cities. And there I was. They discovered me on the little stone seals they uncovered in places named Harappa and Mohenjo-daro. They were so excited to see my special symbols after all that time.

Today, I am one of the world's great unsolved mysteries. Smart people from all over the world are still trying to read my symbols. They use computers and study my patterns, hoping to unlock my language and learn the secrets of the people who made me. I am a reminder of a wonderful, lost world and the clever people who lived there so long ago. I invite everyone, even kids like you, to be detectives of the past. Look at my shapes, wonder about my unicorn and my fish, and imagine all the amazing stories I might one day tell.
