The story

The Secret City of Bricks

Imagine waking up after a very long sleep under the warm sun of a country called Pakistan. I felt the mighty Indus River flowing nearby, just as it had for thousands of years. When I peeked open my eyes, I saw my beautiful streets again. They are made of reddish-brown bricks, all laid out in neat, straight lines, like a giant checkerboard. For a long, long time, nobody knew I was here, hiding under layers of sand and dirt. I was a secret city, a mystery waiting to be found. Who lived here so long ago. Who walked these straight streets. I am a very old and special place. I am Mohenjo-Daro.

I was built a very long time ago, around 2500 BCE. The clever people who built me are known as the Indus Valley Civilization. They were amazing planners. They gave me houses made of baked bricks, and many of them had their own bathrooms and wells to get fresh water. Can you imagine having a bathroom inside your house thousands of years ago. They also built special covered drains along my streets to carry dirty water away and keep everything clean and healthy. My most famous spot is the Great Bath, a huge public pool made of waterproof bricks. People may have gathered there for important ceremonies. The people who lived here were also wonderful artists. They carved tiny, beautiful seals out of stone, with pictures of animals like bulls and unicorns. They also used a special kind of writing on these seals, but it is my biggest secret. To this day, no one has figured out how to read it.

After hundreds of years of busy life, things started to change. Around 1900 BCE, the people began to leave my streets. No one is sure why. Maybe the river changed its path, or maybe something else happened. My houses grew empty, and I fell quiet. The wind blew sand and dust over my walls, covering me up like a cozy blanket, and I went to sleep for a very, very long time. For thousands of years, I dreamed of my busy past. Then one day, in 1922, I felt a little poke. An archaeologist named R. D. Banerji had found me. Soon, more archaeologists arrived. They carefully brushed away the dirt and were amazed to find my straight streets and clever buildings still standing strong after all that time. It was like I was waking up to a new morning.

Today, I am awake again, and I love having visitors. People from all over the world come to walk my ancient streets and see the wonderful city my first families built. They look at the Great Bath and the neat rows of houses and wonder about the people who lived here. Even though my writing is still a secret, my buildings tell a story of a smart and peaceful community that knew how to work together. I am a reminder that thousands of years ago, people built amazing things with great care and planning. Their ideas about keeping a city clean and organized can still inspire us to work together and build a better, kinder world for everyone today.
