Just want Kabuki Theater?
Clack-clack-clack. That is the sound that means I am about to begin. Wooden blocks clap together, and a big curtain opens wide. Suddenly, you see a world of bright colors. Silks swirl and giant fans wave. People in amazing costumes walk onto my stage. They are ready to tell you a story. Before you even know my name, you can feel my magic. I am Kabuki Theater.
My story started a long, long time ago, around the year 1603. I was born on a riverside in a pretty city in Japan called Kyoto. A wonderful dancer named Izumo no Okuni had a brilliant idea. She and her friends started to dance and tell funny stories for everyone to watch. People loved it so much. They would laugh and clap. As I grew up, I changed a little. Soon, all my stories were told by amazing boy actors. They learned how to move and talk in special ways to be anyone they wanted, from a strong hero to a kind princess.
On my stage, stories are extra special. My actors wear wonderful makeup with bright colors. It is called 'kumadori'. Red lines on their faces mean they are a hero, and blue lines mean they are a villain. It helps you know who to cheer for. When something very exciting happens, an actor might freeze in a cool pose called a 'mie'. It is like saying, “Wow, look at this big feeling.”. I tell stories about adventures and friendship. I love to make people happy and share the magic of Japan with families and friends, even today.
