Just want Khon?
Can you hear it? The sound begins with the clear, ringing call of a circle of gongs, the *khong wong yai*. Then comes the rhythmic tapping of wooden keys on a xylophone, the *ranat ek*, and the soaring, reedy voice of an oboe called the *pi nai*. In the grand halls where I perform, this music fills the air with a feeling of deep anticipation, a sense that something ancient and magnificent is about to happen. Then, you see us. Dancers emerge, covered from head to toe in shimmering gold costumes stitched with brilliant jewels. Their faces are hidden behind intricate, expressive masks painted with the features of heroes, demons, and graceful monkeys. Every movement is precise and filled with meaning, telling a story without a single spoken word from the main performers. I am a battle that dances, a poem that moves. I am the traditional masked dance of Thailand. I am Khon.
My story begins centuries ago, in the grand and opulent royal courts of the Ayutthaya Kingdom, a powerful Siamese kingdom that flourished from the year 1351 all the way to 1767. I wasn't born in a village or a town; I was created for kings, queens, and nobles. My purpose was to bring the kingdom’s greatest story, an epic poem of gods and demons, to life right before their eyes. The amount of artistry poured into me was staggering. Master artisans would spend months sculpting and painting a single mask, ensuring the face of a god conveyed nobility or the face of a demon showed pure ferocity. Talented embroiderers sat for countless hours, stitching delicate patterns with real gold thread into every costume, making the dancers shine like divine beings. And the dancers themselves were the most dedicated of all. They began training as children, learning to control every muscle in their bodies. They practiced for years to master each gesture, from the gentle curve of a finger, which could express love or sorrow, to the powerful stomp of a foot, which could signify the start of a war.

At the very heart of my existence is the epic tale I narrate: the Ramakien. This is the Thai version of a very old Hindu story, and it is the soul of my performance. My movements tell the story of its unforgettable characters. There is the noble hero, Phra Ram, an incarnation of a god, who is the model of perfect virtue and leadership. His beautiful and devoted wife is the lovely Sita, whose grace is matched only by her strength. On their side is the brave and loyal monkey warrior, Hanuman, who is not only a powerful fighter but also clever and full of energy. Their great enemy is the mighty ten-headed demon king from the island of Lanka, Thotsakan, a villain of immense power and pride. My dance unfolds their dramatic adventure: the terrible moment when Sita is kidnapped by Thotsakan, and the epic war that follows. Phra Ram, aided by Hanuman and his entire army of monkeys, wages a long and difficult battle to rescue her. I am more than just a performance; I am a story about the timeless struggle between good and evil, a lesson in loyalty, and a celebration of courage against impossible odds.
As time passed and kingdoms changed, the world around me transformed. For a while, it seemed I might be forgotten, as fewer people knew my story and fewer dancers learned my intricate steps. But a treasure this precious is not so easily lost. Dedicated teachers and passionate artists worked tirelessly to keep me alive. They saw me not as a relic of the past, but as a living, breathing part of their culture. They passed down my steps, my stories, and the art of making my masks and costumes to new generations of performers, ensuring I would not fade away. Then, a truly wonderful moment in my long history arrived. On November 29th, 2018, a global organization called UNESCO recognized my importance to the world. They officially named me an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This title means that I am considered a living treasure, a tradition so valuable that the entire world has a responsibility to help protect and preserve me for all future generations to see and learn from.
Today, I am more than just an old dance performed in a palace or a theater. I am a vibrant, living link to a magnificent past, a bridge connecting modern Thailand to the ancient courts of Ayutthaya. Every time a dancer carefully puts on a jewel-encrusted mask, every time the piphat orchestra begins to play its mesmerizing music, the epic story of the Ramakien is born again. The courage of Phra Ram, the loyalty of Hanuman, and the fearsome power of Thotsakan come alive on stage. I continue to inspire new artists, fashion designers, filmmakers, and storytellers who see in my movements and characters a source of endless creativity. I am a reminder to everyone that the greatest stories of heroism, love, and wonder can be told not just with words on a page, but with every graceful, powerful, and unforgettable movement of the human body.
