The story

I Am Khon: The Dance of Heroes

Listen closely. Can you hear the shimmering sound of gongs, the dancing notes of a xylophone, and the sweet call of flutes? Now, look. Before you are dancers in glittering gold costumes that sparkle with every move. On their faces, they wear magnificent, colorful masks with tall, pointed crowns that reach for the sky. It feels like ancient magic and royal splendor have come to life right in front of you. I am a story, but one told not with words written in a book. My tale unfolds in the graceful bend of a hand, the powerful stomp of a foot, and through the silent, beautiful faces of my performers. They bring heroes and villains to life without ever speaking a single word. I am Khon, the dance of heroes and demons from the kingdom of Thailand.

My story begins long, long ago, inside the grand palaces of the Ayutthaya Kingdom, which was founded in the year 1351. I wasn't born in a workshop or an artist's studio. I was created right in the royal court, a special performance meant only for the eyes of kings, queens, and their honored guests. My purpose was to make a very important story, the Ramakien, leap from the page and into the real world. The Ramakien is Thailand's version of a famous epic poem, and it is filled with adventure, love, and epic battles between good and evil. Through me, the royal court could watch the noble hero, Phra Ram, as he fought to rescue his beautiful wife, Nang Sida. They could cheer for the brave and clever monkey warrior, Hanuman, who could change his size and fly through the air. And they could gasp at the fearsome ten-headed demon king, Thotsakan, my greatest villain. For centuries, I was perfected and polished. A king who loved me very much, King Rama II, who reigned from 1809 to 1824, even wrote new episodes for my dancers to perform, making my stories even more exciting and beautiful.

Two of my most special features are the masks my dancers wear and the music that guides them. Can you imagine making something so detailed and precious? My masks are not simple things. They are true works of art, crafted by skilled artisans who spend many hours on each one. They start with layers of paper, shaping them carefully. Then they add a special coating called lacquer to make them strong, and finally, they cover them with delicate, shining gold leaf and jewels. Each mask shows you exactly who the character is—a noble hero, a mischievous monkey, or a fearsome demon. Because the dancers cannot speak from behind these amazing masks, their bodies must do all the talking. Every single movement has a meaning. A flick of the wrist might mean love, a certain step might show anger, and a leap could mean victory in battle. The music from the 'piphat' orchestra is my voice. The musicians use gongs, drums, and wind instruments to guide the story. The music tells the audience when to feel excited for a fight, sad for a farewell, or amazed by a magical spell.

For hundreds of years, I was a treasure seen only within the palace walls. But over time, I began to dance my way out of the royal court and into the hearts of all people. Theaters were built so that everyone in Thailand could see the adventures of Phra Ram and Hanuman. My story traveled across oceans, and I began to perform for audiences all over the world, sharing the beauty of Thai culture. On November 29th, 2018, I received a very special honor. A worldwide group called UNESCO recognized me as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. That’s a fancy way of saying I am a living treasure that belongs to the whole world, something precious that must be protected. I am more than just a dance. I am a living storybook, connecting the past to the present and keeping the incredible imagination and traditions of Thailand alive for everyone to see and enjoy.
