Just want Khon?
Can you hear that? It is the sound of a special orchestra playing just for you. Gongs clang like happy bells, big drums beat like a giant’s heart, and wooden xylophones sing a twinkling song. Now look. Dancers appear in glittering gold costumes that sparkle with every step. They wear the most amazing, colorful masks that cover their whole heads, showing faces of heroes, giants, and clever monkeys. It feels like magic, doesn’t it? Hello. I am Khon, a story that dances. I was born in the beautiful country of Thailand, and I have an exciting tale to share with you.
My story began a very, very long time ago, around the 15th century. I was born inside a grand royal palace in a place called the Ayutthaya Kingdom. I was created for a special reason: to tell the exciting adventure of the Ramakien. The Ramakien is an epic story about a brave prince named Phra Ram. His beautiful wife, Sita, is taken away by the mighty, ten-headed giant king, Thotsakan. Phra Ram must go on a long journey to rescue her, with help from his loyal monkey army. The dancers who tell my story don't use words. Instead, their graceful hands and strong, powerful movements show you everything that is happening. Every little bend of a finger has a meaning. Each handmade mask is a work of art, and it tells you right away if a character is a hero, a scary giant, or a playful monkey warrior.
For hundreds of years, I only danced inside the fancy walls of the palace for kings and queens. It was a great honor, but stories are for everyone, right? So, as time went on, I stepped outside the palace gates and began to dance for all the people in towns and villages. They would gather around to watch the great battle between good and evil. And on a very special day, November 29th, 2018, something amazing happened. An important group called UNESCO, which looks for treasures all over the world, said that I was a treasure for everyone on Earth. That made me so proud. I am still alive and dancing today. New dancers are always learning my special steps, and clever artists are always crafting my beautiful masks so my story can go on.

Even though I am very old, my stories are about things that every child understands. They are about being brave when you are scared, helping your friends, and knowing that good will always triumph in the end. I hope you see that stories can be told in many ways—not just with words in a book, but with music that makes you tap your feet and dancing that fills you with wonder. These stories help keep the world a beautiful and exciting place for everyone.
