The story

The Story of Miffy

Before I had a name, I was just a feeling. I was the feeling of a bold black line, drawn with a steady hand, curving around to form my simple shape. I was the feeling of two perfect dots for eyes, gazing out with quiet curiosity. I was the feeling of a simple cross for a mouth, ready for a story or a snack. My world was born from four bright, happy colors: a strong, warm red; a calm, clear blue; a sunny, cheerful yellow; and a fresh, grassy green. These colors weren't just on the page—they were the feelings of my world, a place of safety and wonder. I began as a little white rabbit, a fleeting thought that hopped from a father’s imagination into a bedtime story told on a rainy holiday. He sketched me to life, and from that moment, I was real. You may have seen me in a book or as a friendly lamp lighting up a room. The world knows me as Miffy.

My story truly begins with my creator, a kind and thoughtful man from the city of Utrecht in the Netherlands named Dick Bruna. My existence is thanks to a family holiday he took in the summer of 1955. While staying in a village by the sea, he would often see a little rabbit hopping around in the grassy dunes near their house. Each night, he would tell his oldest son, Sierk, a story about this little rabbit. Soon, he decided to give the rabbit a form, and he picked up his pencil and drew me. In my very first book, published that same year, I looked a little different than I do today—a bit like a fluffy, floppy-eared toy. But Dick was a perfectionist. He believed that simplicity was the key to reaching the heart. He drew me over and over, using a special paintbrush to create his signature lines. He called them “trembling lines” because they weren’t perfectly straight or computer-generated. They had a slight wobble, a human touch that made me feel warm and alive. Then, on my redesign in 1963, he made a very important change. He decided I should always face the reader directly, looking you right in the eye. It was his way of making sure we could be true friends, sharing secrets and stories without any barriers between us.

My life unfolded within the clean, square pages of my books. My world is not one of epic quests or grand battles, but of the quiet, happy moments that make up a childhood. These are the adventures that every child, everywhere, can understand. I have flown a plane, gone to the zoo to marvel at the tall giraffes, and felt the crunch of fresh snow under my boots. I have celebrated my birthday with a cake and candles, learned to ride a bicycle (even with a little wobble at first), and tended to my own little garden. In these stories, I am rarely alone. I share my world with my loving Mother and Father Bunny, who are always there with gentle guidance, and with my dear friends, like Melanie, who is also known as Nina in some countries. My stories, which started in Dutch, soon began to travel. They were carefully translated into more than 50 languages, from English to Japanese. It turned out that the joy of flying a kite or the comfort of a bedtime story feels the same to children in Amsterdam, Tokyo, or New York City. I became a quiet little ambassador, sharing the universal language of childhood across the globe.

Over the years, I have become something more than just a character in a book. I am an example of minimalist design, a principle that believes beauty is found in simplicity. My form shows how just a few carefully placed lines and a handful of primary colors can create a world of emotion and meaning. Because my expression is so simple—just two dots and a cross—you can see your own feelings reflected in my face. When you are happy, I look happy too. When you are curious, I share your wonder. And if you are feeling a little sad, my simple face can offer quiet comfort. My creator, Dick Bruna, passed away in 2017, but he left me behind to continue our work. I live on in my little square books, on toy shelves, and in the memories of those who grew up with me. I am a reminder that there is profound beauty in the simple things and that a true, lifelong friend can be born from nothing more than a few trembling lines on a page.
