The story

The Story of the Tall, Pointy Stone

In a warm, sunny land where sand stretched as far as I could see, I was born from a giant red stone. I am very, very tall and pointy, like a needle reaching for the sun. All over my body are special picture-stories called hieroglyphs, telling tales of kings and sunshine. For a long, long time, I stood proudly while people looked way up to see my tip touch the bright blue sky. I am an Obelisk.

A great king, a Pharaoh named Thutmose III, had me made thousands of years ago, around the year 1450 BCE. He wanted me to stand tall and celebrate the sun. Workers carefully carved me from one single piece of rock. It was hard work but they made me strong and beautiful. Many, many years later, I went on a big adventure. In the year 1877, kind people built a special boat just for me, and I sailed across the big, splashy sea to a new home.

Now, I live in a cool, busy city called London, right next to a winding river. I watch red buses drive by and boats float on the water. Even though I am very old and from a faraway place, I love it when children and families come to visit me. I am a whisper from the past, showing everyone that stories carved in stone can travel across the world and last forever, connecting us all.
